Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen auf Teneriffa.

Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen in Tenerife. “Madonna mia”.

The holy Fiesta starts again on 16th of July 2012. On Tenerife the Carnival is not only the a great and colorful spectacle. But also the Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen on Tenerife in Puerto de la Cruz. Every year in mid July, in the Canary Islands, in honor of the patron saint of sailors and fishermen.

Early in the morning we went around the Plaza del Charco in Puerto de la Cruz drank hot chocolate and eat delicious churros. Later that day we meet at the port then to the picnic, barbecue and partying. While at the harbor young men try to balance on a wet tree trunk around to reach a flag, the spectators splash each other with water guns or even jump into the water.

In the late afternoon, finally, the Virgen del Carmen at the church of San Telmo is carried down to the harbor on a boat. Young sailors called Cofradia take over this job, which means for each of them, of course, a great honor. After a short boat trip to Punta Brava, it goes back to the church. The entire Fiesta is a very lively event that transforms Puerto de la Cruz in a great pool party.

A small version of the Fiesta can be found of course in Fuerteventura. Especially good celebrated in Morro Jable and Corralejo.
